Attic Cleanout in Greenville, SC: What to Check Before the Hatch Opens

By Ian McAlister, Patriot Hauling. Serving Greenville and the Upstate of South Carolina.

Before and after: a cabinet and household junk beside a gray-sided house, then the same spot cleared

The attic has been closed for years. You pull the hatch, heat comes down, and you remember why nobody goes up there. Boxes, insulation scraps, Christmas bins, and something you cannot name from the last owner. That is an attic cleanout in Greenville, SC: not a curb pile, and not a garage you can walk into with a cart.

Patriot Hauling is a veteran-owned junk removal crew in Greenville and the Upstate. Ian McAlister, a Marine Corps veteran, runs the truck. He walks the job with you and prices it before anything goes on the trailer. If the trailer is free and the job is in the Greenville area, he tries to haul it that visit. That is not a promise. He confirms by phone. We load. We leave.

What an attic cleanout in Greenville covers

Most attic jobs are a mix of boxes, loose junk, and the stuff that never made it downstairs. That matches garage and attic cleanouts on the services list:

  • Boxes and bins. Holiday decorations, baby gear, clothes, and the cardboard that has been up there since the last move.
  • Furniture that got stuck. A dresser, a crib, a headboard someone shoved through the hatch and never brought back down.
  • Insulation scraps and leftover building material. Bags, leftover rolls, and the pieces that fell when someone last crawled across the joists.
  • The odd pile. Old fans, a window unit, luggage, and the bag nobody wants to open.

An attic cleanout is that space. It is not a whole-house job unless you say the downstairs rooms are in scope too. It is also not a crawl space. Tight access under the house is a different job.

Old paint cans, mothballs, and mystery jugs turn up in attics. Set those aside and ask before the visit. Do not send them down in a black bag with the decorations.

Look in the boxes before anything leaves

Heat and a dark corner make people pack first and sort never. Reach the totes you can get to before Ian shows up. You do not have to empty every bin from the far joists. You do have to find tax folders, photos, extra keys, and the jewelry that got stuffed "for later."

Take papers and small valuables downstairs before the hatch becomes a loading hole. If a tote is still taped from the last move, say that. Christmas wrap on top does not mean the bottom is trash. If this is a parent's attic or a rental that has to be empty, one person should be able to point at what stays.

The hatch, the stairs, and the route out

Access decides the attic job. A packed floor above a tight hallway is not the same as boxes already sitting on the porch. Tell us:

  • Hatch size, and whether it is a simple panel or pull-down stairs
  • Standing height once you are up there, and whether you walk on joists or a floor
  • How many turns from the hatch to the front door, and whether there are more stairs after that
  • Narrow halls, tight corners, or a long walk to the truck
  • Where a truck and trailer can park, plus gates or HOA rules you already know about

If the pull-down stairs are broken, say so. If the only way up is a ladder you own, say so. Ian still walks it before the final price. He is not guessing from a phone photo of the hatch.

What to send before we roll

Leave the attic as it is. We need the hatch, the path down, and a count of what is actually up there.

Count the load. Twelve plastic bins, a crib, leftover insulation, a window unit, and loose bags along the far wall is a usable list. "Some junk in the attic" is not.

Show the opening and the floor. Photograph the hatch or pull-down, then the length of the attic from that hole. If bins hide a dresser, take one more frame from the side. The hallway and the stairs below matter as much as the junk.

Mark what stays. Insulation that is still doing its job stays unless you say otherwise. Put a note on the decoration bins you are keeping. If a closing, a listing, or an HVAC crew needs the space clear, say the date.

Those photos get you a faster ballpark. The number you pay still comes after Ian sees the hatch in person. You can book a free attic cleanout quote.

Heat, insulation, and the stuff that is not just boxes

Boxes are the easy part. The parts that change the job:

  • Loose-fill or torn insulation. We haul bags and scraps already out of place. Replacing a full insulation job is not what this crew sells. Say whether the insulation stays.
  • Wiring and HVAC. We do not disconnect services. If a window unit or a dead air handler is coming out, say whether it is already unhooked.
  • Pests, droppings, and stuck furniture. If you have seen animals, or a dresser that went up through a wider hatch, say that. Ian will tell you if it is still in scope.

We haul what comes out of the hatch. If your HOA already told you where a truck can sit, pass that along.

Attic cleanout or a dump trailer

A roll-off in the drive does not help you get a dresser down pull-down stairs. We do not drop that box. Either Ian carries the load out, or you load a dump trailer we bring to the house.

If you want a weekend to empty the attic yourself, rent a trailer. We drop it off and pick it up. You never hitch it or tow it. Trailer rental is $150. That covers up to 2 days and the first $30 of dump fees. Any dump fees over $30 are due after pickup. Pay by invoice or cash. Extra days are $100 each.

Load it yourself if you have the help and the time. Call Ian if you do not want the stairs.

How the pickup works

This is haul-away, not a curb wait. Ian walks the hatch, the stairs, and what is actually in the attic. That is junk removal in Greenville: he prices it before a box moves. Same rule as the top of this page: trailer free, Greenville area, he tries, he calls first. Extra hands come when the attic is packed.

Payment is after the job: cash, check, card, Venmo, or Zelle. Veterans, military, and first responders get a discount. We donate and recycle when the item still has a next home. When the job is done, walk it with Ian so the keep bins are still where you marked them.

Where we work

Attic jobs run from the Greenville area: Greenville, Taylors, Greer, Simpsonville, Easley, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Laurens. The Greenville junk removal page is for pickups in town. Anderson and Spartanburg are longer runs, not a same-day promise. If you are just outside that list, call and we will say whether the drive is worth it.
